A patio door can look shut while its locking hook misses the keeper. A window handle can turn without pulling the sash into its frame. These are different from a lost front-door key, but they affect whether a home can be secured just as directly.

The locking mechanism has to move freely, reach the correct position and engage a sound keeper. Each step can fail independently. A new cylinder will not compensate for a worn hook, and a replacement handle will not align an opening that has moved.

A replacement should preserve the intended operation of the opening. On a sliding door, the hook, keeper and handle travel need to work together. On a window, the catch must engage correctly without requiring excessive force or disguising a problem with the sash.
Secondary locks or pins may be relevant to some openings, but their suitability depends on the assembly and its use. An additional locking point should not obstruct an opening needed for escape or defeat the manufacturer's operating arrangement. Any property-specific requirements need to be checked before hardware is added.
If a current lock can be restored by correcting a mounting or engagement issue, wholesale replacement may be unnecessary. Conversely, a cracked body or worn internal part may make repeated adjustment a poor solution. Ask which component is failing and what the proposed work will change.
Rentals, shared property and everyday use
Get the owner's or manager's authorization before changing hardware in a rental or on a shared opening. A communal patio entrance, shared corridor window or building-controlled access point should not be treated as an individual occupant's lock to alter.
Consider who uses the opening. A household member should be able to operate the fitted hardware as intended without improvised tools or unusual force. Keep any required keys accessible to authorized occupants while following the appropriate arrangement for the property.
After work, test the opening through its normal cycle: open, close, engage the lock, release it and reopen. A latch that appears engaged but releases under ordinary door movement has not achieved the intended result. Tell the technician if a particular fault is intermittent so it can be considered during testing.
